Hundreds of production line employees and a second shift were added as part of Ford’s $600 million investment in the assembly plant last year. The investment was agreed to after a new four-year contract was ratified between Ford Motor Company and the United Auto Workers union.
Several members criticized the contract for not including certain concessions the union had to give up to remain independent from a federal bailout.
Nearly 3,000 employees will now work on producing the 2013 Escape with a third weekend-line expected to be in production later this year, depending on market demand. Wages for new workers will be significantly less than current employees’s wages as part of Ford’s commitment to keeping jobs from moving over seas.
Ford expects to sell at least a quarter million Ford Escapes, meeting last year’s mark.
