A southeastern Kentucky lawmaker who was severely injured earlier this year is resigning his House seat.
State Representative and public school teacher Dewayne Bunch suffered a head injury while breaking up a fight at Whitley County High School in April. He underwent surgery for an infection and is still recovering.
House Republican Leader Jeff Hoover said in a statement that Bunch’s family had decided that it was best for him and his constituents to resign.
Hoover further highlighted Bunch’s military service and teaching and political careers.
A special election will have to be held to replace Bunch. The governor will set the date.
