The principals of three merging healthcare systems in Kentucky can expect more questions from state lawmakers. Last week, representatives from University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital and Catholic Health Initiatives addressed the Interim Joint Committee on Health and Welfare. They fielded questions about how reproductive and end-of-life services would be protected after the entities merge […]
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has weighed in on the pending merger between University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital and a division of Catholic Health Initiatives. Under the merger, U of L Hospital will not be able to provide abortion, stem cell research, vasectomies, treatments for infertility, emergency contraception for rape victims and birth control counseling. […]
Catholic hospitals, like most religious healthcare institutions, follow a set of medical ethics based in religion. It’s probably unnoticeable for a patient with a broken leg, but for others, the difference is clear. There’s a gap between what the Catholic church deems acceptable and what the law allows in reproductive services. That gap includes abortion, […]
The Indiana man who received a hand transplant at Louisville’s Jewish Hospital earlier this month is speaking publicly for the first time about the procedure. Thirty-six year old Donnie Rickelman lost his left hand in a factory accident thirteen years ago. His new left hand, transplanted July 10, came from an undisclosed male donor from […]
Thirteen days remain until August 2, the date after which the US will default on debt payments. Donnie Rickelman of Linton, Indiana, about a two hour drive northwest of Louisville, received a new left hand Sunday. Rickelman’s left hand was partially amputated in a factory accident 13 years ago. The mishap […]
Three major hospitals are joining forces to provide a statewide healthcare delivery system for Kentuckians. The partnership involves University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital in Louisville and Saint Joseph Health System in Lexington. They’re still working on a name for the joint effort, but James Taylor of U-of-L Hospital says the partnership means better healthcare […]
“I’ve been asked, would I do it again, and I would. It was well worth it. And I can applaud just like everybody else now. I’m very thankful to be able to do that,” he said.
Transplant programs often depend on federal grants. Breidenbach says he doesn’t think the growth of a medical center in Arizona will put any of Louisville’s funding at risk, but all federal funds may be harder to secure if a ban on earmarks is imposed.
Dr. Warren Breidenbach will head the Division of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgery at the University of Arizona.
