Beshear Returns From Washington, Says Environmental Regulation Is “Balancing Act”

Weeks after calling for the federal government to get off the state’s back when it comes to coal regulation, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear had the chance to discuss the issue with the White House.

Beshear returned this week from a meeting with other governors and the president. He says he talked with cabinet members about his frustrations with environmental restrictions on the coal industry.

One Week After Protest, Fights Against Mountaintop Removal, EPA Continue

It’s been one week since a group of protesters ended their sit-in at Governor Steve Beshear’s office. A group of 14 protesters spent the weekend in Beshear’s office protesting the surface mining technique commonly called Mountaintop Removal. The sit-in ended with the annual I Love Mountains Day rally in Frankfort on the 14th.

Mine Safety Campaign Unveiled

Since 1890, more than seven thousand miners have lost their lives in Kentucky coal mines. But in recent decades, because of mine safety improvements, mining deaths have been on the decline. So far this year, five Kentucky miners have been killed. Energy and Environment Secretary Len Peters wants to see that number drop to zero.
