Breeders’ Cup: Drosselmeyer Wins Classic; Goldikova Third In Mile

by Rick Howlett on November 5, 2011

Drosselmeyer is this year’s champion of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, held today at Churchill Downs.

The victory was among several upsets recorded on the final day of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

Drosselmeyer, with 14-1 odds, overtook the more highly touted Game On Dude with a strong stretch run to win the $5 million Classic.

Earlier, the six year old European mare Goldikova came up short in her quest for a fourth straight victory in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. That race was won by Court Vision, a 64-1 longshot.

In a race that featured some of next year’s Kentucky Derby contenders, Hansen was the winner in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, holding off Union Rags.
The two days of Breeders’ Cup races at Churchill Downs offered $26 million in purse money.

Next year’s event will be held at California’s Santa Anita Park.
