Big East Reportedly Ready To Issue Invitations

by Rick Howlett on November 1, 2011

The University of Louisville and other members of the Big East athletic conference could soon be getting some company.

The conference is reportedly ready to extend invitations to potential new members over the next several days.

A person familiar with the process tells the AP that the Big East will invite Boise State, Navy and Air Force for football only and SMU, Houston and Central Florida for all sports.

U of L has been a member of the Big East since 2005, but was in talks to move to the Big 12 Conference. However, Big 12 officials last week instead chose West Virginia.

In addition to the Mountaineers, the Big East is also losing founding football members Pittsburgh and Syracuse and member-to-be TCU.

Cardinal athletic programs will remain in the Big East for now, but athletic director Tom Jurich says the university could consider other options as conferences continue to re-align.
