Green Supporters Defend Lawmaker Against Removal Trial

The group Concerned Citizens for District One is holding another rally Thursday to denounce the expulsion trial of Councilwoman Judy Green, D-1, but there’s growing speculation the embattled lawmaker is preparing to step down.

For months, Green vowed she would not resign before her expulsion hearing begins, but sources in City Hall say Green and her husband were seen taking boxes out of her office earlier today.

Asked if Green was stepping down, attorney Derwin Webb, who is representing Green in the removal proceedings said he hadn’t spoken to his client.

“I have no idea,” says Webb.

Green supporters include residents and people outside the district who say the misconduct charges are racially-motivated. The charges were brought by five council members who said Green violated council rules in two separate cases.

Earlier this year the city’s ethics commission ruled Green deliberately violated the law in two complaints and recommended her ouster.

Concerned Citizens spokesman Jessie Harris says Green made unintentional mistakes that do not warrant her ouster from office.

“You know I am a follower of Christ and I think if he was here I think he would say, ‘he that hath no sin cast the first stone.’ It looks like maybe all of us have made some mistakes. I will reiterate again that I do not think that the crime doesn’t fit the penalty,” he says.

Other supporters told WFPL that Green has no intention of relinquishing her seat and will stay in office to face her accusers.

“If she were going to step down she would have told us,” says civil rights activist Mattie Jones. “She is going to fight on. We are not God, but we will keep fighting.”

The expulsion trial is scheduled for September 12 where the remaining members will decide her fate by a two-thirds vote. The county attorney says state law allows the hearing to go forward even if Green steps down from office.
