Officials from the Environmental Protection Agency will be in eastern Kentucky Thursday and Friday, and I’ll be following them on their tour and reporting back.
The group includes Gwen Keyes Fleming, the regional administrator, and Lisa Garcia, who is EPA head Lisa Jackson‘s senior advisor for environmental justice. These officials and others from the Region 4 office will make stops in Manchester, Vicco, Whitesburg and Lynch—all communities that are struggling with the environmental effects of coal mining. They’ll meet with community members and organizers from Kentuckians for the Commonwealth. A few of the meetings will be with smaller groups, but there’s also a community meeting planned in Whitesburg tomorrow night.
Besides reporting on the EPA’s tour, I’ll be gathering sound for a few features that will air in the coming weeks on WFPL.
