RPK Marks 100 Days of Conway Criticism With Attack Ad

by admin on August 12, 2011

After hammering the point for 100 days, the Republican Party of Kentucky has released an online video attacking Democratic Attorney General Jack Conway that continues to question if he had any involvement in a drug investigation that focused on his younger brother.

In April, Conway’s brother, Matt, stepped down as an assistant prosecutor in the Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney office. The resignation came months after Matt Conway admitted to Louisville police that he lied about being tipped off by narcotics detectives about an investigation into him selling and using illegal drugs.

For months, GOP Chairman Steve Robertson has sent out a daily news release asking what the attorney general knew about the investigation regarding his brother. No criminal charges were filed , but police records showed associates close to Jack Conway inquired about the investigation and that the attorney general recommended his younger brother obtain legal counsel.

“It is just plain wrong for the state’s top law enforcement officer to assist a person under criminal investigation in gathering internal information from police and obtaining private legal counsel,” Robertson said in a news release. “Jack should have immediately publicly disclosed that the police investigation was compromised and removed himself from the situation. Instead, he did the exact opposite. No one in his right mind would argue that the attorney general’s brother received special treatment in this matter.”

The Conway campaign has not responded to our request for comment.

In previous interviews, however, Conway has denied interfering with the probe into his brother’s actions and called the attacks “mean and out of bounds”. When asked if he’s worried about the attacks hurting his re-election bid, Conway told Pure Politics he wasn’t concerned about the effects on him politically, but was worried what it will do to his brother.

“I think the good people of Kentucky know I’m not my brother,” he said during a press conference in June.

Conway is running against Republican challenger Todd P’Pool.
