6am Update: Water Main Break and Boil Water Advisory

by Todd Mundt on July 12, 2011

A broken water main at the University of Louisville has caused widespread flooding across part of the Belknap campus. A Boil Water Advisory is in effect for more than 25,000 customers this morning.

The break occurred near Floyd and Warnock Streets, trapping people in buildings as water rose to levels as high as five feet.

As much as 40 million gallons of water escaped in the water main break, which lowered water pressure in much of the area between U of L and the Ohio River. The Louisville Water Company has issued a boil advisory for the area south of the river, north of the Watterson Expressway, east of 9th Street and west of Bardstown Road.

Company officials say the boil water advisory is precautionary.

U of L officials say the university will be open today. U of L updates are available on the university’s website.

6:40am UPDATE The Belknap campus is closed today.
