Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear flew over western Kentucky today to assess the damage from storms and floods.
The governor has also asked President Barack Obama for a federal disaster declaration, which would make money and other resources available for relief efforts.
“We’re just making sure today that everything is going as well as it can go, that we’re doing everything that we can do on a state level, and with all of our state agencies to make sure we get our people through this in as good of a situation as possible,” he says.
Beshear says the state emergency management agency is still deciding whether to open a regional emergency operations center in western Kentucky. Forty-eight counties and 17 cities have declared states of emergency. The Governor expects to add more communities to that list.
