Boycott Continues in Indiana House

by Gabe Bullard on March 15, 2011

The Republican leader of the Indiana House says his patience is wearing thin with Democratic legislators whose boycott has entered its fourth week.

Most Democrats skipped Tuesday’s floor session, continuing their walkout over Republican-backed measures the Democrats say are attacks on labor unions and public schools.

Republicans began imposing $250 daily fines on the absent Democrats, but House Speaker Brian Bosma says other options are being considered.

Bosma says he told Democratic leader Patrick Bauer that Republican accommodations on some bills won’t last if the Democrats continue to leave the House with too few members to conduct business.

Democratic Representative Shelli Vandenburgh says she and her colleagues want to return, but they believe the public needs to learn more about the GOP proposals.
