The University of Louisville graduate who last year became just the fourth alumnus to receive a Rhodes Sholarship is preparing to leave for the University of Oxford in England to begin her studies.
Monica Marks just returned from Istanbul, where she was studying Turkish law under a Fulbright Scholarship.
It includes at least two years of study at Oxford, where says she’ll pursue a degree in Modern Middle Eastern Studies.
“I’d love to someday work in a legal capacity or an advisory capacity for a human rights organization. I’m very interested in human rights law and Islamic law and how that’s related to American foreign policy in the Middle East. It’s a big problem right now,” she said.
Marks is a native of Rush, Kentucky, near Ashland. She’s the first female U of L graduate to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and the only Kentucky student in this year’s class of scholars.
