Indiana state health officials say recalled eggs that may be contaminated with salmonella have been sold in the state. But the risk to Hoosiers is slight.
The eggs came from Iowa. They were sent to 22 states, not including Kentucky. In Indiana, they were stocked in stores as far south as the Evansville area.
Health department director of food protection Scott Gilliam says some of the eggs were sold into the food service industry and have been cooked into products that were shipped to other states. While those products will be tracked and destroyed, Gilliam says they pose little health risk.
“In food service, when the product is going to be cooked and incorporated into other cooked products, there’s much less risk than if you have the eggs yourself and you’re cooking sunny side eggs where it’s undercooked and there’s still risk,” he says.
Gilliam says many of the eggs sold in grocery stores have been found and destroyed, though the state will continue to work with county health departments to make sure contaminated eggs are not sold.
