A group dedicated to honoring the memory of 49 victims of a Lexington plane crash has unveiled its choice for a permanent memorial.

The Comair Flight 5191 Memorial Commission says artist Douwe Blumberg will create a sculpture featuring 49 silver birds. The memorial will stand in the Hospice Reflection Garden at the UK Arboretum.

“One of the most unique features about this piece is that capsules with tokens of remembrance of each person will be placed inside these birds,” says Blumberg.

Blumberg says the sculpture could possibly incorporate a water feature.

Flight 5191 crashed at on August 27, 2006 after attempting to take off down the wrong runway at Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport.
