White lightning, hooch, bathtub gin, mountain dew, moonshine… no matter what it was called, spirits from unlicensed stills haunted the hills of Appalachia and beyond. Varieties of moonshine are still produced all over the world, and the story of illegal booze weaves itself throughout many parts of American history.
