Derby Field Taking Shape

By Rick Howlett

Owners and trainers are shuffling their entries as the field for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby takes shape.

Trainer Todd Pletcher could have as many as five starters in the Derby.

Pletcher announced Monday he was pulling Rule from the race because he wasn’t pleased with the three year old’s Churchill Downs workouts.

But another Pletcher-trained horse, the filly Devil May Care, was entered in the Derby Monday, and a fifth Pletcher starter, Interactif, could join the field Tuesday.

The early favorite, Eskendereya, also trained by Pletcher, was scratched Sunday because of a leg injury. The new early¬†favorite is Lookin’ At Lucky (right) , trained by Bob Baffert.

Also added to the field Monday was Jackson Bend, which finished second to Eskendereya in the Florida Derby.

The post position draw for the 136th Kentucky Derby will be held Wednesday at noon.
