University of Louisville graduate Monica Marks is preparing for a move to England next year, where she’ll enroll at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.
The 23 year old Marks learned last week that she’s among 32 people from the United States chosen for the prestigious scholarship this year, and the only one from Kentucky.
Marks graduated from U of L this year with a combined major in political science, women’s and gender studies and philosophy. At Oxford, her studies will focus on the Middle East.
“It’s like a masters degree, in modern Middle Eastern Studies, with a focus on Islamic law and comparative human rights law in the Middle East,” she said.
Marks is currently living in Istanbul, Turkey, where, under a Fulbright research grant, she’s studying the history of the Turkish legal system.
