Plans for H1N1 Vaccine Clinics In Every Louisville School Outlined

by scrosby on November 24, 2009

Health department officials announced today their plans for running H1N1 vaccine clinics at all the schools in Jefferson County over a three week period. They’re touting the effort as the largest school immunization project since the Salk Polio Vaccine trial in the 1950’s.

Health Department Director Dr. Adewale Troutman says all 135 JCPS schools and all the parochial schools and private schools in Louisville will have a chance to have their students and staff inoculated at an on-site clinic. He says the need to have school-age children vaccinated is still high.

“While there is some evidence nationally, and we’ve heard about this in the last several days, that doctor’s visit and hospitalizations from H1N1 have gone down, in the last few weeks I would remind us that H1N1 flu activity in 43 states, including Kentucky, remains widespread,” says Troutman.

He adds they have no idea how many doses will be needed for the three-week effort that begins Monday. But he’s confident they’ll have enough of the vaccine for the need.

“We have quite a bit on hand at the moment, and every week we have to go through a process of putting in an order, and then having it sent to us by UPS,” says Troutman, “and over the last few weeks, we’ve seen the regularity and the number of doses dramatically increase, which is why we feel we’ll have enough to get through this particular cycle.”

Troutman says parents are welcome to visit their child’s school to help their child through the process, and some organizations are volunteering their help.

“A couple of the local PTAs have told me they’re organizing volunteers from the PTA to come to their schools to assist us in that effort, if a child needs a hand held or supported in some way, local PTAs are starting to come to the fore and say ‘we’ll be there to help those kids’,” he says.

Parents will have to have returned a permission slip to the school for their child to receive the vaccination. A JCPS representative says they’ve already received about 27-thousand permission slips.

Dates subject to change due to vaccine supply.
