The Lincoln Trail District Health Department begins offering the H1N1 vaccine in schools this week.

The district includes Grayson, Hardin, Larue, Marion, Meade, Nelson and Washington counties.

Registered nurse Wendy Keown says first in line will be elementary students.

“As we receive more vaccine, we’re going to work through all the schools until we have completed all of the schools in each of our counties,” Keown said.

Keown says district officials hope to have all students vaccinated by Christmas break. The vaccine is optional, and parental consent is required.

In Jefferson County, public and Catholic school students who have parental permission will be vaccinated starting November 30.
