Bellarmine University has announced the creation of a student-run team to provide emergency medical services. The Bellarmine Emergency Response Team, or BERT, is made up entirely of student volunteers and will be on duty at university events.

The team will treat minor injuries and respond to more serious emergencies until Metro EMS arrives.

“We’ve got about ten EMTs already trained right now; we’ve got another three in the pipeline for January, and we’re looking to start—we’ve already serviced one event here on campus—we had the Irish Festival on campus last weekend,” said Dr. David Porta, faculty supervisor for the response team.

Bellarmine’s response team is one of about 300 university-sponsored emergency medical teams nation-wide.
