The University of Louisville’s provost says U of L will emerge stronger than ever from the problems that have plagued the university over the past year.

Dr. Shirley Willihnganz  delivered the State of the University address during a ceremony Wednesday on the Belknap Campus.

She says the past year has included struggles with the weather and the budget, the indictment of the former education deatn, the departure of neurosurgoens to a competitor, a sex scandal involving the men’s basketball coach and other challenges.

Willignganz also praised the university’s physical plant staff for its work in dealing with three weather disasters, especially the August 4 flash flood.

“All the while reassuring us not to worry, that it could be fixed, and that school would open on time for fall semester. they were as good as their word. And during welcome weekend, parents were expecting New Orleans after Katrina were amazed at how great everything looked,” she said.

During the ceremony, U of L also conferred honorary degrees on former Governor Paul Patton and retired Jewish Hospital Healthcare President Hank Wagner.
