Lexington’s Urban County Council will consider a recommendation Thursday to cut the city’s garbage collection fees by ten percent this year and another ten percent next year.

Mayor Jim Newberry is proposing the cuts, which he says would be made possible by efficiency improvements in the city’s waste management department.

Some council members say they want to wait until the savings are actually realized before cutting the fees, but Councilman Jay McChord says he favors taking action now

“People are very frustrated in today’s culture they are nickeled and dimed by their government to death and while this may be a nickel, it’s a nickel you hand back because it’s a nickel obviously that we are not needing this second.

The council voted 9-5 during a Tuesday work session to put the matter on its regular meeting agenda.
