Committee Passes Anti-Sagging Resolution

by Gabe Bullard on September 2, 2009

The Louisville Metro Council’s Community Affairs committee has passed a resolution encouraging citizens to pull up their pants.

The resolution’s sponsor, Councilwoman Judy Green, wants Louisvillians to literally tighten their belts. It would not punish anyone for wearing trousers below the waistline, but instead strongly encourages people to not sag their pants.

The resolution unanimously passed the committee Tuesday after public comments from community leaders in favor of the measure.

Louisville resident Michael Bishop addressed the committee, saying he hopes the resolution encourages businesses to block employees from wearing saggy pants.

“That’s going to send a message to all his friends,” he said. “You can’t work. I can’t even see how they got the job. How can you hold an application in one hand and a pen in the other when you’re holding your belt up?”

Committee co-chair Bob Henderson said those testimonials changed his mind about the resolution.

“I wasn’t for this when we started—I’m against these kinds of resolutions in general. But then again had it not been for the leadership that came forward and the passion that was shown here about what you would like to try to do. I feel the same way about the issue of there being fines and things,” said Henderson. “I don’t want fines, I want compliance.”

The resolution goes to the full council next week. Green said she hopes it will foster community discussion about proper public attire for young people.

“So it takes the community; it takes the business, it takes the churches, it takes the block watch persons, it takes the people at the community center—it takes all of us,” said Green.

I would like to “strongly encourage” the Metro Council to direct their passions towards more worthwhile endeavors. It does not take a village to pull someone’s pants up. This is a complete waste of time.

SAGGIN, I LIVE IN THE COMMUNITY, I SEE THE MEN WITH THEIR BOXERS SHOWING. SAGGIN IS A OUTWARD EXPRESSION OF SELF HATE AND THE LACK OF ANY MATURE ADULTS ( MEN) PROVIDING A POSITIVE INPUT!

THE STANDARDS FOR SELF RESPECT AND THE COMMUNITY ARE SET TO LOW.

I don’t know about self-hate…but the point here is that the government should not be able to tell people how to dress (nudity being the exception). I certainly do not condone sagging jeans (definitely not my style, definitely not appropriate in school or the workplace), but I don’t think dictating fashion is Metro Council’s role. Parents, peers, co-workers & supervisors maybe. Law makers? Come on. That’s just silly.
