Armed Man Arrested At U of L Law Library

by Rick Howlett on August 21, 2009

University of Louisville officials say a former student and part-time instructor who had been banned from campus was arrested Friday morning after entering the law library carrying two concealed handguns and ammunition.

Provost Shirley Willihnganz says a library employee recognized 55 year old Thomas Irwin and called police. She says Irwin was escorted from the premisis without incident.

“In less than two hours from the beginning of this incident, Irwin was interviewed, arrested and has been sent to jail,” Willihnganz said at an afternoon press conference.

Irwin is charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon and criminal trespass.

Police say he was licensed to carry a gun, but concealed weapons are prohibited on the U of L campus.

Irwin was banned from the campus late last year for allegedly harrassing another employee.
