President Barack Obama has approved the request for a major disaster declaration in Jefferson County following last week’s flood.
Mayor Jerry Abramson worked with Congressman John Yarmuth and Governor Steve Beshear to request the declaration. Now that it’s granted, it will allow Louisvillians whose losses in the flood were not covered by insurance to apply for grants and low-interest loans.
Federal Emergency Management Agency officials will likely be in Louisville next week to take individual applications for the loans. Emergency officials have documented more than one thousand homes and businesses that were damaged in the flood.
Louisville Metro officials have also applied for federal disaster relief funds. Federal officials will soon begin reviewing that application. In order to receive the funds, the city will have to document at least 5.2 million dollars in uninsured losses.
