Metro Louisville officials will still apply for federal disaster relief funds, even though the city is insured for 100 million dollars worth of damage.
The city needs to account for 5.2 million dollars in damage beyond insurance to public buildings from Tuesday’s flood in order to ask the President to free up disaster relief funds. Mayor’s spokesperson Chris Poynter says the city will still apply for a disaster declaration, as the damage may exceed insurance reimbursements.
“If you take into account the government buildings, the University of Louisville buildings and the Jefferson County Public Schools, that is 110 buildings either that had some damage or extensive damage,” he says.
If a disaster declaration goes through, the federal government will pay for 75 percent of the total cost of repairs and the state will pay for 12 and a half percent.
The funds will only cover damage to government property, but Poynter says federal loans for homeowners may also be available.
