The Kentucky Derby Festival is in full swing, and festival officials say the economy has not put a significant damper on the celebration thus far.
The festival started with Thunder Over Louisville on the 18th. About 700 thousand people attended the airshow and fireworks display.
Spokesperson Mark Shallcross says festival officials are optimistic that attendance at this week’s events will remain steady.
“I think a lot of people are staying closer to home instead of planning trips out of town just to save money and time,” he says. “That sort of behooves the Derby Festival.”
Shallcross says final numbers on Pegasus Pin sales have not yet been tallied, but daily reports put sales on a par with previous years.
