South Africa: 15 Years After Mandela
On April 22nd, South Africans will take part in their third democratic election since Nelson Mandela helped usher in the end of Apartheid in the early 1990s. Mandela’s political party, the African National Congress (ANC), is expected to win once again, but with party leader Jacob Zuma suspected of corruption, there is question as to whether the ANC still represents Mandela’s celebrated ideals for the “Rainbow Nation.” Fifteen years after Mandela’s inauguration as President, we will consider the condition of South Africa to see how the country has progressed since the historic regime change, where it has faltered, and what the future may hold.
