Louisville Metro Government officials have announced that the city will use $5 million in federal stimulus funds to rebuild the 57 year old West Louisville Pumping Station adjacent to Chicasaw Park.
At a Friday press conference at the site, Metropolitan Sewer District Executive Director Bud Schardein said the station is one of 16 installed along the Ohio River to prevent a catastophic flood such as the one that occurred in 1937.
“If you had been standing in this spot in 1937, you would have been in eight feet of water,” Schardein said.
Schardein says construction will take about 18 months and will create up to 200 jobs.
MSD is putting up $12 million for the project.
