Saying the chemistry was “just not right,” University of Kentucky Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart announced this afternoon that Billy Gillispie won’t return for another season as UK’s basketball coach.
Gillispie compiled a 40-27 record during two seasons in Lexington. After losing eight of their last eleven regular season games this year, the Wildcats failed to reach the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991.
Both Barnhart and UK President Lee Todd said during a Friday afternoon press conference that Gillispie’s dismissal was not just about wins and losses, with Barnhart adding that the coach’s overall job performance “wasn’t where we wanted it to be.”
Barnhart said no successor has been chosen.
