Power Restored To 90% Of Kentuckians

by Gabe Bullard on February 11, 2009

Power restoration efforts continue in Western Kentucky, where some utilities say it could take weeks to get everyone back online.

Western Kentucky was among the areas hardest hit by last month’s ice storm. In the two weeks since the storm, more than 90% of those who lost power have had it restored.

But Public Service Commission spokesperson Andrew Melnykovych says the final customers are in heavily damaged or remote areas where crews are encountering difficulties.

“It’s everything from lines down because of trees falling across them to, in some cases, entire lines with poles and everything down where you’ve got to go back in and basically rebuild the system from the ground up because the poles themselves have to be replaced,” he says.

At the peak of the outage, more than 750 thousand Kentuckians were without power.
