While power is expected to be fully restored in Louisville in the next few days, parts of western Kentucky remain hazardous and without electricity.
Last week, Governor Beshear called up the entire force of the Kentucky National Guard to help with storm relief. Guard spokesperson David Altom says the soldiers are still on duty, delivering supplies and checking on residents.
“We’re finding there are cases where people have needs, specific medical needs, oxygen bottles have to be delivered. In some cases, elderly folks who are reluctant to leave their homes, they want to stay that way,” he says. “So in a few cases, our soldiers are making once or twice daily checks on those folks.”
Altom says there’s been no word on how long the soldiers will remain on active duty.
