Lincoln Celebrations Approaching; Obama Invited To KY

Final preparations are being made in Kentucky and the rest of the country for the commemoration of President Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday.

The official Lincoln Bicentennial celebration was launched last year, but the 16th president’s actual 200th birthday comes up in just over two weeks, February 12.

Larue County, Kentucky Judge-Executive Tommy Turner is a member of both the state and national Lincoln Bicentennial commissions. He says President Barack Obama has been invited to celebrations at the Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site.

“We also understand he will be President of the United States for three weeks when the bicentennial occurs and with the issues he is facing, he might not be able to leave the office at that time,”Turner said.

Turner says on February 12, the U.S. Mint will release the first of four special Lincoln pennies. It will include a depiction of the president’s log cabin birthplace.
