Beshear Says Cigarette Tax "The Best Way" To Raise Revenue

by Gabe Bullard on December 12, 2008

Governor Steve Beshear is preparing to meet with Kentucky’s legislative leaders. They will discuss possibilities for dealing with a $456 million shortfall.

Beshear has proposed a 4% budget cut, but he says something has to be done to raise revenue.

“I happen to feel that increasing the tax on tobacco products is the best way, at this point, to do it, and I think it’s the most acceptable way,” he says.

The governor has proposed raising the cigarette tax 70 cents. An effort to significantly raise the tax failed in the last legislative session.
