Merton Remembered On Death Anniversary

by Rick Howlett on December 10, 2008

It was 40 years ago this week that Thomas Merton died suddenly during a visit to Thailand.

Merton, the Kentucky-based Trappist monk who became a best-selling author and social activist, was remembered Wednesday during a brief ceremony in downtown Louisville.

Among the participants was Ann Walter from St. William Church, who says Merton would probably be a bit embarrased by the attention he’s received since his death.

“But i think its important because we need people who lead us and challenge us,” Walter said.

Thomas Merton died in 1968 at the age of 53 from accidental electrocution.
