Indiana residents who get a new driver’s license – or renew their old one – are no longer allowed to wear prescription glasses or smile in their photo.
BMV spokesperson Dennis Rosebrough says it’s necessary because the state recently began using new facial recognition software to combat ID fraud.
“Because it looks at the permanent physical features of a face, it is important that we have a clear, unobstructed view of those physical features,” says Rosebrough. “So things like glasses, for example, really obstruct the view of some of those permanent physical features.”
Rosebrough says new photos taken are being compared to photos already in the system. He says facial recognition still works in those cases, but it’s more effective with the new process.
