Naturalization CeremonyHundreds of immigrants gathered in Louisville Friday to take the oath of American citizenship together.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao told the more than 300 new citizens they should work to become an example for others.

“Future generations will look back and speak of your courage, your determination, your optimism, you forging a life of greater opportunities for them,” she said.

The ceremony was held at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

Kevin Vilums came to the ceremony to support his father, who is originally from Latvia. Vilums says his dad lived in this country for nearly 60 years before deciding to become a citizen.

“I think it’s get more strict with travel and I think he might want to own a gun,” said Vilums “I’m really not sure, just for protection, you know.”

Vilums also said his father was looking forward to voting in November.
