Today was our annual Summer Reading show where guests in various book-related professions joined the show to talk about their picks for summer reading. Just as important were your calls and suggestions. It is one of my favorite shows for several reasons. One, I am an avid reader, not as much since becoming the State of Affairs’ producer (and Studio 619 interviewer), but I still feel incomplete if I’m not reading at least two books.
Reason number two? Well that is how I started with the show. Way back in 1999 I was a part-time bookseller for Hawley-Cooke Booksellers (a local independent). Unbeknownst to me, one of my regular customers was the producer of SoA. He asked me to be a guest and as they say . . . . the rest is history.
So looking back and looking forward, my picks for Summer 1999 still hold up as great reads:
- “Layover” – Lisa Zeidner
- “Starting Out in the Evening” – Brian Morton (one of my top ten of all time)
- “Night Inspector” – Frederick Busch
And for Summer 2008:
- “The Lady Elizabeth” by Alison Weir
- “Restless: A Novel” by William Boyd
- “All the King’s Men” by Robert Penn Warren
Now comes the time for my favorite question – What are you reading?
