Even More On City Cars

by Gabe Bullard on June 12, 2008

As we reported today, the city of Louisville will soon start charging police officers $30 per month for their take-home cars. Those officers that use their vehicles for second jobs will continue to pay $60 per month.

In our feature on the topic, Mayor Abramson said there was no plan to end the take-home program. The reasoning behind letting officers use their cars for personal business is that it promotes public safety by having more officers visible and ready to respond. In the video below, the Mayor – jokingly – says he’ll consider cutting the car program if gas reaches $20 a gallon.

Lots of city departments are feeling the pinch of higher gas prices. What do you think the breaking point should be for cutting programs entirely?
