Gas Prices Expected To Rise For Derby

by Gabe Bullard on May 1, 2008

One Kentucky Derby Week tradition in Louisville has returned…higher gas prices.

Last year gas prices jumped about 20 cents per gallon in the days leading up to Derby, and that’s generally the case this year.

Louisville Better Business Bureau Charlie Mattingly says it’s not unusual.

“I don’t think that’s a mystery to any of us, that prices do often go up around Derby time,” says Louisville Better Business Bureau President Charlie Mattingly. “It probably reflects two things: One is supply and demand and the second is opportunity to maximize income, and those are both part of free enterprise.”

Mattingly says he doesn’t believe any retailers are breaking the law.   A spokesperson for the Kentucky Attorney General says the office is accepting and investigating complaints of price gouging.
