The battle of brother against brother lends itself to dramatization, and it’s been the subject of countless films and books – more than a few of which are the product of historian and author James McPherson. His scholarship has focused on not only the historical context and repercussions of the Civil War, but the personal lives and motivations of the soldiers who fought.
