Tornado Cleanup, Damage Assessment Continue

Residents of tornado-ravaged western Kentucky have been returning to their homes to retrieve belongings and begin the rebuilding process.

An outbreak of tornadoes late Tuesday and early Wednesday killed seven people in Kentucky and dozens of others in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama.

In Kentucky, three people were killed in a Muhlenberg County mobile home, and four Allen County residents died when a storm destroyed two homes near the Tennessee border.

Allen County Deputy Sheriff Robert Gaston says the destruction is unbelievable.

“Devastation. Like somebody went in and mowed the forest down, the woods there is just mowed down,” Gaston said.

Governor Steve Beshear has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas. There was also widespread damage in Monroe, Meade and Hardin Counties.
