The Status of Women in Kentucky

A new report on the economic status of women sees Kentucky ranked 47th in the U.S. There is some hope, though – while the Commonwealth ranked 49th for the percentage of women with a college degree, Kentucky was 28th for women with health insurance.

As with many such rankings, the key is one of the indices – the percentage of women with a college degree. The spin-off from a low-level education sometimes means women are less likely to get good jobs or earn more. Tune in to WFPL to hear more about this report card from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.

Project Graduate

Attention former Kentucky college students who never graduated! Colleges and universities across the Commonwealth want you back!

State data analyzed by the council indicates that more than 300,000 Kentucky adults between the ages of 25 and 50 have some college credit, but no degree. Significantly, more than 11,000 of those former students have earned 90 or more credit hours. Project Graduate’s challenge is to get those students back on campus.

“The Sporran”

Do you believe in magic, dragons and things that go bump in the night? Local author G.L. “Gary” Gregg believes and wants to share the magic with kids of all ages through his first work of fiction, “The Sporran: The Remnant Chronicles I & II.” It’s the story of a boy, a magic pouch and a quest – what more do you need? Join WFPL’s Robin Fisher as she talks with Gregg about writing fiction and why believing in magic is important.

Rudolph Alexander

At age 17 he shot and killed a gang member. After a two-hour trial, Rudolph Alexander was sentenced to die in Georgia’s electric chair. Eight years later, he was paroled and not only did he stay out of trouble, he’s made an incredible contribution to society. Professor Alexander now teaches at Ohio State in the School of Social Work. He spoke with WFPL’s Heidi Caravan.
